LEONE Family Tree (Originally from the island of San Pietro, Sardinia)

I have Leone's in my Maltese family tree and for the longest time I couldn't figure out where they originated from.   Even though there are Leone's in Malta it was not a popular Maltese name and I always wondered.  The name looked Italian but where in Italy I did not know.  For years I tried to pinpoint the exact location in Italy.

I knew my Leone's in Malta were all from Birkirkara.  I could only go back to 1800's in my search before I came to a dead end.  I searched the surrounding towns to no avail then today I went on the website www.geneanum.com  just to throw some of my names in, looking for any possible updates and under the marriage of Sign Francesco Leone to Aloisia Micallef on 27 Oct 1813 at Porto Salvo, Valletta ...

I found these words in the note field:

de l'ile San Pietro en Sardaigne (sud-ouest)

which translates to:  of the island of San Pietro, Sardinia (southwest).

Once I found that I started googling the keywords, critiquing the search ....... and then I found this on the website www.maltagenealogy.com :

WELCOME!

Welcome to BACK to MALTA blog!

There are more Maltese outside the Maltese Islands than there are citizens residing in the country itself. The Maltese outside Malta are either emigrants or descendents of emigrants. The countries which have most traditionally hosted the Maltese diaspora are Australia, Canada, the U.S.A., and Britain. Nevertheless, there are Maltese living in virtually every country around the world and this blog will travel the world in hopes of bringing the Maltese back to Malta.
